Dorchester Cottage is a considered, full home renovation by Southern Homes, guided by balance. Respecting the soul and history of a traditional stone cottage while carefully upgrading it for modern living. Every space was approached with sensitivity and intention, resulting in a home that feels cohesive, calm, and effortlessly liveable, where contemporary design sits comfortably within its original character.
Kitchen
The kitchen renovation began by taking the walls back to their original natural stone, allowing the building to breathe and restoring its authentic charm. Dark grey cabinetry brings depth and contrast, paired with quartz worktops finished with a classic ogee edge for softness and detail. Porcelanosa grey floor tiles ground the space, completing a country style kitchen with a refined, contemporary edge.
Sitting Room
Built in storage either side of the fireplace creates structure and visual interest, while opening up the previously enclosed staircase transformed the flow of the room and introduced natural light. Light, neutral tones were chosen to lift the space and counterbalance the cottage’s lower ceilings, complemented by grey washed wood flooring for warmth and texture.
Dining Room / Office
Designed to serve two purposes, this long and narrow room was carefully zoned to feel both functional and harmonious. A custom banquette defines the dining area, paired with a handmade English walnut table to anchor the space. The office sits at the far end of the room, doubling as a practical storage solution while maintaining a seamless visual flow.
Bedroom & Bathroom
The bedrooms were kept light and restful, with natural wool carpets chosen for their warmth, comfort, and insulating qualities. Perfectly suited to the stone structure of the cottage. The result is a soft, inviting atmosphere that feels timeless and considered.
